Several of these species respond poorly to captivity and prove difficult to breed. Turtle Homes Asia is involved in taking active steps towards creating viable captive breeding populations of threatened Asian turtles. Using food market rescues and donated animals Turtle Homes Asia places these turtles with experienced keepers, organizations, and institutions in the hope that they will successfully reproduce in captivity. The offspring from these breeding groups can be used to help satiate pet trade demands, increase bloodlines, and perhaps someday be released into the wild. Captivity will preserve these species for now, giving time to create programs that will allow them to be introduced into suitable habitat in the future.
