It was mid July when I received a phone call from the Director of the Make A Child Smile organization www.makeachildsmile.org. They had apparently received a package that should have gone to us accidentally. We began to talk and she told me about how her organization sends small gifts and cards to terminal children. After our conversation I went to her website and looked up a child who was interested in turtles.
Immediately the membership of Turtle Homes began putting together a gift package that included clothing, candy, toys and even signed posters, books and cards from Steve Irwin, The Crock Hunter, from Animal Planet. The big prize was a captive bred leopard tortoise. Justin's dream was to own a tortoise, but his parent's didn't know how to go about. In the middle of August Mary phoned us and asked if we could send the tortoise so that Justin would have time to enjoy him. She feared that Justin's time was running out. She obtained permission from Justin's doctors and within 3 days we were able to drive "Brave" to Justin's home. We were unable to meet Justin at that time because he was in the hospital in Delaware. Justin has been a big part of Turtle Homes. We watched for his updates and prayed for a miracle. On Christmas 2002 we had that miracle. Justin was taken home. His body was finished with this world and he was taken to heaven where he will no longer feel the pain of his tumors. He is our Angel.
