Sulcata Reality Check
by Lori Green

Directions: Answer all 25 of the questions below. Answer each question as truthfully as you can. It is our intention to help you determine whether or not your home situation is favorable for keeping sulcata. The decision to take financial responsibility for the care of a sulcata is a big one, and not everyone thinks ahead about what their life will be like five or ten years down the road. Will you always want this animal even though the care it will need only increases with age?

Good luck!

A sulcata starts out looking like this

By adulthood, it will  build a scrape like this shown at right. It was built by a 25 year-old sulcata that weighs in at 150 pounds.

Do you like your landscape?
Take a moment and think!

On the ground is a yard stick. Can you lift this tortoise? Will you be able to lift it in ten years, when it is fifty pounds heavier? Do you live in a cold climate, where a tortoise this size will need to live with you, inside your home, over the entire winter?
